Meknes Royal Palace Rehabilitation

The Royal palace of Meknes was erected in the walled citadel under the Almohad dynasty during the 11th century. The palace has been called the Versailles of Morocco, but its grand scheme was never fully completed.

After having become abandoned, and fallen into decay due to unthoughtful rehabilitation plans in the 1980’s that weakened its structure, ACP was brought in to take over the new rehabilitation process. The main concern of the project was the rehabilitation of the two cupolas which are considered the architectural jewels of the Royal Palace. Erected in 1650, the cupolas crown one royal meeting room and one throne room used by King Mohammed the VI during his annual visits to the agricultural fair in Meknes. The main approach was to remove the concrete additions made in the 1980’s and restore the cupolas using traditional building techniques.
