Aziza Chaouni was selected to contribute to the issue of the Journal of Architectural Education on Building New Africa. She presented for the first time an interview of the late Moroccan architect Elie Azagury she recorded in 2007. Azagury was the first licensed Moroccan architect and a member of group GAMMA, the Moroccan branch of CIAM. He was an influential voice that shaped not only the modernist movement in Morocco, but also the urban landscape of the country.
Azagury’s Derb Jdid social housing project made it to the front cover of JAE. Azagury’s was Chaouni’s mentor and as such, she is grateful for the editorial board of JAE to have given her the opportunity to honor his memory.
Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) is a peer reviewed journal that has been published since 1947 for the purpose of enhancing architectural scholarship in design, history, urbanism, cultural studies, technology, theory, and practice.
