A multi-purpose space, dubbed ‘Multiflex’, opened on June 7th, during the first day of the Fez World Festival of Sacred Music organized by the Association Esprit de Fez (AEF).
The director of AEF Faouzi Skalli invited us in December 2012 to transform a derelict storage space located in the Dar Tazi historic compound in the Medina of Fez into a multipurpose space, which could house a cafe, a lounge, meetings areas, movie projections, conferences etc…We gave the building a face lift: adding a secondary porous facade, extending the nearby plaza into the cafe interior, introducing flexible furniture on wheels, and opening the space’s back wall onto a neighboring historic wall. All furniture and construction was done by craftsmen local using materials.
Multiflex is the first multi-purpose, NGO run public space of its kind in the medina of Fez.The mobile furniture are to be completed in the next couple of month.
Multiflex is the first phase of a larger rehabilitation of the whole Dar Tazi site, including buildings and gardens. We are very proud and excited to be working with AEF, and in particular with Layla Skalli, and are looking forward to continue our collaboration and to develop together more projects in the Medina of Fez.
